Wood Carvings

Banner2.jpg

This page contains a selection of my carving work over the last twenty years.

The image below is a carving that I did in around 1991. It has become for me something of a 'signature piece'. It was originally carved for an exhibition at the Alexandra Palace in London, hosted by 'The Woodworker' magazine. I recieved no teaching or help with this piece and it was my first relief woodcarving. It measures 5' x 2' x 2", and was originally carved as a wall hanging. I have resisted various suggestions to turn it into something functional like an ottoman or a bedhead for fear of damaging it! (However if I were offered an appropriate sum to do so I would consider it!)

 Fidei Defensor

This piece above was inspired by an architectural feature made of terracotta and is carved in English Walnut. The horns, which are not visible here, are made from Jelutong. (A light wood in colour and weight that is used widely in puppet making) The overall height exceeds 20 inches.

Decoy_Duck_p.jpg

This female mallard decorative decoy duck is my first attempt at the craft and I learned many things about what not to do when carving wildfowl! I have since bought some instructional material and I won't make the same mistakes again.

More detailed images of this project can be found in the index section at the top of this page
